Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. How do I download/install Poltergeist?

    1. Click the download link (sent via email or on the direct downloads page) that corresponds to the operating system (Windows or macOS) and plugin format (AU, VST3, etc.) that you want to download and install.
    2. Run the installer that you just downloaded and follow the installer instructions to ensure the plugin installs in a folder accessible to your DAW.
    3. Open your DAW and find the plugin you just installed. You'll be prompted for an email address - enter one that is valid and accessible to you. A confirmation code will be sent to that email.
    4. Open the registered email and enter the confirmation code into the plugin window. Note that the confirmation code will expire 20 minutes after it's sent.
  2. Does Poltergeist work in Apple Logic?

Yes! As of v1.0.2 the issues with running Poltergeist in Logic as an AU plugin have been fixed.

  3. Data/Privacy:

    1. Q: Why is an email required to use Poltergeist?
A: I plan on releasing paid software in the future that will require email-based registration. Poltergeist is free, and part of the "deal" is that I can test this infrastructure before I begin accepting payments. I collect very limited usage data (see below) and your email is used to tie this data together.
    2. Q: What data do you collect?
A: The time. Your operating system. Your DAW. The plugin type (AU or VST3). Whether or not you were served a banner ad and if you clicked it.
    3. Q: Do you sell my data?
A: I will never sell your personal data.
    4. Q: Am I subscribed to a mailing list?
      A: No.
    5. Q: Will there be ads other than "Buy Me a Coffee"?
A: Probably. But not before a paid ad-free option becomes available. I will never paywall features that affect audio processing on free plugins.
  4. What's with the security warnings?

    1. Windows Installer: By default, Windows warns you about executable files that are not code-signed. Microsoft does not currently allow companies that have legally existed less than 3 years to use Azure Trusted Signing. There are official plans to change this in the near future, and I'm waiting on that.
    2. macOS: EffectiveFX is an official paying member of the Apple Developer program and all Poltergeist releases after 0.1.0 are code-signed. You may see a warning that running Poltergeist "requires a lower security setting" and I believe this is because it is relatively new/has few installations.

Create a Problem Ticket

In addition to addressing your issue, problem tickets help me identify and address issues and create the best possible software for everybody - I greatly appreciate the help! Because development resources are limited and responses aren't immediate, before reporting a problem first try:

  1. Installing the latest version of the software, by clicking the "Update to version x.y.z" link in the top right of the main plugin window;
  2. Look in the FAQ section above for your issue or a similar issue.

If the issue persists, please fill out a problem ticket below. I appreciate your time and effort to create a precise and detailed explanation of the problem.
